It was unlikely the PSP would trump its awesome sales of nearly 160,000 units last week. Nevertheless, the PSP is once again on top, selling 60,467 units. Unfortunately, Sony’s high-def console the PlayStation 3 was dead last, selling an abysmal 3,931 units. Look on the bright side though: during this week, Sony’s current-gen hardware outsold all its competitors current-gen hardware combined.

Hardware and software sales for the week of October 20th - October 26th:

  • PSP — 60,467
  • Wii — 24,292
  • DS Lite — 22,965
  • Xbox 360 — 7,844
  • PS2 — 6,962
  • PS3 — 3,931

Grand Theft Auto 4 PC Hands-On Preview

Grand Theft Auto IV’s huge — no doubt about it. But a select section of gamers still hasn’t played the game because it hasn’t yet hit their platform of choice: PC. Well, it’s coming — and at a recent hands-on press event, we got the chance to check out some extra features Rockstar hopes will make the PC version well worth the wait.

First, players will be able to use the keyboard, mouse, and gamepad at the same time. What this means is that if you choose to plug in a 360 controller (sacrilege, I know), you’ll be able to drive or move with the gamepad but can also quickly switch to the mouse if you wanna execute some precision shooting. Some PC gamers may hate the idea of using a console controller, and you don’t have to use it, but it actually works quite well in this instance. I personally watched 1UP executive previews editor Thierry Nguyen easily switch to the mouse when he wanted pixel-perfect aim for headshots, then quickly change back to the controller setup when he got behind the wheel.

The PC release’s standout addition, though, is the ability to record and edit. By simply pressing a button on the keyboard, you can save the last 30 to 60 seconds of gameplay, depending on how much memory the onscreen action’s currently eating up. After saving as many film clips as desired, you’ll enter the editing program. Since the clips are all rendered in real time, the editing program gives players a surprisingly high amount of options, such as moving the camera to different character perspectives or positioning it anywhere in the environment. Players can also set time markers, which makes it easier to edit together multiple angles and add effects or music. After the individual clip’s edited, just drop it into a progress bar and then add other clips to create extended videos. Aspiring video editors with a lot of time on their hands can probably craft some truly impressive clips — as demonstrated by some sample videos Rockstar showcased. But even with only a few moments at the controls, Thierry and I were able to create entertaining clips using multiple effects and angles.

Here’s where video creation will truly shine with the PC crowd, though: sharing clips over Rockstar’s Social Club website. Once a video’s created, players can export it in high definition, standard definition, or in a lower resolution for easy Web uploading. Users can vote on any vid uploaded to the Social Club, and top clips will be available for all players to watch straight from the game’s main menu, which will feature continuous Social Club updates. Hopefully, the PC GTA4 market’s big enough to take advantage of this, as I can’t wait to watch some of the clips that video-savvy players are sure to create.

With technical upgrades — players can push the amount of onscreen traffic based on the power of their machine — the control options, and the video-editing system, it’s clear that GTA4 PC’s not just a cash-in port. Sure, PC gamers might not always get the games first — but sometimes, they have it best.

Skate It for Wii, DS Coming on November 19

Skate It
EA announced today that Skate It will be coming to the Nintendo Wii and DS on November 19. These semi-sequels to the original Skate employ balance board and stylus touch controls, respectively, and their platforms of choice makes them more likely to chase the casual demographic.

This season is already swamped with games as we lead up to the holidays. Skate It will be hitting just one week after games like Mirror’s Edge and Wrath of the Lich King, and in the same week as Left 4 Dead and Tomb Raider Underworld. While its control scheme might keep it from competing directly with these more hardcore titles, it’s also hitting against Nintendo’s Animal Crossing: City Folk. With such stiff competition, let’s hope Skate It doesn’t get lost in the shuffle. Check out our preview for more details on the game.

Mercs 2 Getting Obama and Palin as DLC

Obama in Mercs 2
Presidential candidate Barack Obama and Vice-Presidential candidate Sarah Palin will be appearing in Mercenaries 2 as downloadable content, according to a video report from X-Play (via GamePolitics). Obama issues some “change” to the innards of a tank commander, while Palin exercises her pit bull tenacity on an unsuspecting helicopter pilot. As GamePolitics notes, the Venezuelan government has already expressed outrage at the invasion theme in Mercs 2, and including our actual candidates is likely to get another round of comments from Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez.

Politics have certainly taken a portion of the spotlight among the gaming community this season, with Obama winning Xbox Live’s Rock the Vote poll and subsequently placing ads in Burnout Paradise. All the buzz has even garnered some amount of mainstream attention on how gamers are reacting to the candidates. Though this inclusion is firmly tongue-in-cheek, it’s still fun to see our community’s own unique take on the national elections. Check out the full video to see Palin wrestling a pilot, and Obama kicking a soldier in the face.

Battlefield: Bad Company Recruits Community Choice Map Pack

Bad Company
Along with updating the PS3 version to support Trophies, EA released four new multiplayer maps yesterday for their explosive first-person shooter Battlefield: Bad Company. Titled the Community Choice Pack, these fresh battlegrounds are based on single-player levels from the game, and can be downloaded free of charge from the PlayStation Store and Xbox Live Marketplace.

Two of the four new maps — Acta Non Verba and Par For the Course — were selected by player voting on EA’s Battlefield community site, while Ghost Town and Crossing Over were chosen by the development team at DICE. Coincidentally, the two developer selections actually line up with the third and fourth most popular community picks, so read into that what you will.

As has been proven over and over with Burnout: Paradise, a continuous stream of free content is never a bad thing. Here’s hoping more console game publishers look to these examples for how to keep players coming back to their products for months after release — maybe even years, in the case of Burnout.

Top 10 Badass Undead

 Top 10 Badass Undead

EGM’s Top Ten Badass Undead
Girl, I can thrill you more than any ghoul could ever dare try.

By Scott Sharkey

In honor of the season of ghosts, goblins, fun-size candy bars and the subsequent egging of the people who give out those stupid things, here are our favorite guys without enough sense to stay dead.

10. Half-Life series: Headcrab Zombie
<!–

System: PC

–>

Headcrab

What’s worse than being a zombie? Not much. Unless you’re a zombie with a giant gonad stuck to your head. It’s even better when you’re still conscious and your screams for help are muffled by your testicle-hat until some bearded jerk throws a saw blade at you.

9. Legacy of Kain series: Raziel
<!–

System: (PS1/PS2)

–>

Raziel

Maybe taking the “undead” idea a little too far, Raziel is a kind of double-undead, returning from a second helping of death to feed on other vampires. This would’ve been more awesome if his double-resurrection hadn’t somehow made him twice as whiny.

8. Monkey Island series: LeChuck

System: PC
