iPhoneApple has named its most popular games of 2008 for the iPhone and iPod Touch in both the paid and free categories, reports the MTV Multiplayer Blog. Texas Hold’em took the top spot as a paid title, and was one of the higher priced items on the list. The prices of the top ten run from only $.99 to $7.99, but the list was dominated by games that cost $2.99 or less. Some in the industry have suggested that $3 is the magic “impulse buy” price point for downloadable games, and this data seems to back up that claim. Check the full list of paid games below:

  1. Texas Hold’em ($4.99)
  2. Moto Chaser ($.99)
  3. Crash Bandicoot: Nitro Kart 3D ($5.99)
  4. Super Monkey Ball ($7.99)
  5. Cro-Mag Rally ($1.99)
  6. Enigmo ($1.99)
  7. Air Hockey ($.99)
  8. Bejeweled 2 ($2.99)
  9. Flick Bowling ($.99)
  10. Line Rider iRide ($2.99)

Apple also provided a free list, and unfortunately we don’t know how these downloads compare to the paid games. It would be interesting to see if any paid applications outsold the free ones, and by how much, but Apple hasn’t released that information. Check below for the full list of free games:

  1. Tap Tap Revenge
  2. Labrynth Lite Edition
  3. Sol Free Solitaire
  4. iBowl
  5. Pac-Man Lite
  6. Touch Hockey: FS5
  7. Cannon Challenge
  8. Audi A4 Driving Challenge
  9. Sudoku
  10. reMovemh

The iPhone has been gaining traction as a casual gaming device since the introduction of the AppStore, and seeing a list like this highlights its audience. Games like Bejeweled and Texas Hold’em seem to emphasize the device’s more casual focus, while the presence of mascots like Crash Bandicoot or Super Monkey Ball seem to indicate it’s connecting at least somewhat with the core gamer demographic.
