Dead Space: Extraction Won’t Use MotionPlus, After All

Dead Space: Extraction ‘Debut’ trailer HD

Earlier this week, news spread across the Internet (as news has a habit of doing) that Dead Space: Extraction, a prequel to EA’s survival horror title released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 last year, would incorporate functionality for the upcoming Wii MotionPlus add-on. Well, it turns out that’s not the case, as the report was the product of a misinterpretation.

Here’s what happened: Speaking at the 2009 Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference in San Francisco, Electronic Arts COO John Pleasants touched on the publisher’s plans for the Wii MotionPlus. Evidently he also made mention to Dead Space: Extraction during this same part of his talk, which gave the impression that the game would incorporate functionality with the add-on (whenever it’s actually released). But EA has since confirmed to IGN that the initial reports were in fact a misinterpretation, and Dead Space: Extraction will not use MotionPlus functionality.

As IGN notes, considering Dead Space: Extraction is a “guided FPS” (to use the parlance of its developers) that focuses more on accurate shooting than accurate motion controls, the lack of MotionPlus functionality doesn’t seem like any great loss. The game is currently planned for release in October.

EA Sports Readying MotionPlus Games Despite Possible Delay

Wii MotionPlus

For those hoping that EA Sports would immediately incorporate functionality in their games for the Wii MotionPlus (the new add-on that’ll bring a greater degree of accuracy to the Wii’s motion controls), well there’s good news and bad news. Electronic Arts has confirmed that their first wave of Wii sports games this year will indeed include support for the MotionPlus… but that doesn’t mean the device will be out in time to use it.

Confusion over Nintendo’s launch plans for the MotionPlus have surfaced after they changed the release date for Wii Sports Resort, the game the MotionPlus was announced to launch with as a bundle package. Originally planned for a spring 2009 release, the game now only has a less specific “2009″ release on Nintendo’s press site. But as MTV Multiplayer reports, the confusion isn’t changing EA’s plans, as Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 and EA Sports Grand Slam Tennis — both planned to ship on June 16 — will have MotionPlus support built in, whether the device is out or not.

“Tiger and Tennis will be compatible, but not dependent, on WMP,” said David Tinson, head of PR for EA Sports. “They will ship with the functionality, regardless of when WMP comes to market.” EA also recently announced that Dead Space: Extraction — currently planned for release in October — would include MotionPlus functionality as well. [UPDATE: Turns out Dead Space: Extraction won't also have MotionPlus functionality. See details here.]

Rumor: Ready At Dawn’s new GoW for PSP already in the works since 2008?

God of War Chains of Olympus - Image 1

Oh wow, would you look at that. Finally some PSP news that’s actually not coming from John Koller! Surprise, surprise! Ha!

This one’s a rumor though, probably spinning from what Koller revealed yesterday. Remember when he said that Sony’s in talks with Ready At Dawn to get them back on PSP development? Some people are wondering, if RAD does go back into the PSP arena, what game would it be? Jak & Daxter, God of War, or something else?

If this rumor proves to be true, it could be none other than Kratos himself making another handheld comeback.

According to Joystiq’s “trusted source,” RAD really did surrender all their PSP devkits back in June, right after God of War: Chains of Olympus went gold for Japan. However, they “received new kits in late 2008 after Sony ordered up the sequel.”

If so, could it be that they’re well into development for the new GoW PSP game already? It could even be that this year’s E3 will be graced by Kratos in, not just in the form of GoW3, but maybe also for the new GoW PSP. Heck, why not even stretch it and say that the new PSP game could possibly coincide with the PS3 game’s release early next year, hmm?

Well, a new God of War for the PSP would most definitely be welcome. As would a new Grand Theft Auto too. No confirmation anywhere yet, so we’ll keep tabs on this as developments come in.

Koller also wants new GTA for PSP; reacts to GTA4 360 DLC, Chinatown Wars on DS

GTA Legends fan art by Patrick Brown - Image 1Yet again, we hear from John Koller. He’s been everywhere since yesterday. He already said that he wanted Ready At Dawn back for PSP development, and now, it looks like he doesn’t want to let go of Rockstar Games too. Well, who wouldn’t?

Talking to MTV Multiplayer, SCEA’s Koller says they’re not ready to give up on Grand Theft Auto for the PSP. There’s definitely room for more:

No one should sleep on that franchise. That s a tremendous franchise for PlayStation in general. We ve had two [GTA:LCS, GTA:VCS] that are the top two sellers on PSP right now. So, there s definitely continued conversations with Rockstar on all their brands. That s nothing that s left the PlayStation family.

My, my, if Sony and Rockstar are having meetings about a new game… this gives the GTA: San Andreas Stories rumor some backing! But anyways, moving on…

True enough, most every GTA installment got released on a Sony platform - the more recent of which is GTA IV on the PS3. And speaking of which, there doesn’t seem to be any bad blood about the Xbox 360 version getting its own exclusive DLC. For Koller, it’s all business:

To be honest, Rockstar has to manage their business as they see fit. We re very good partners with them. They just launched The Lost and the Damned for 360, so, they need to make their own business decisions. But we certainly have a tremendous relationship with them and always have.

Note that I earlier said that most every GTA installment got released on a Sony platform. Operative word: most. Because here comes GTA Chinatown Wars, and it’s just about to be released on the DS very, very soon. Like March 5 soon! Here’s Koller’s take on the matter, and he doesn’t seem to be all that bothered about it either:

It s an interesting launch on DS. It raises some eyebrows in a lot of areas. It ll be interesting to see how that sells.

Codies’ new Operation Flashpoint ‘not a sequel,’ original dev insists

1b2ef_ofp_gettothe_choppa Codies new Operation Flashpoint not a sequel, original dev insists

We’ve all heard this story before: Boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, boy and girl produce child, boy decides to create next child by himself, girl sues boy for infringing on legal rights of girl … alright, so maybe this is a little different. Bohemia Interactive, creator of Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis, this week posted a press release on its company forums, stating that Codemasters’ upcoming OFP sequel (Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising) isn’t a true “sequel.”

Leora Hermann, a lawyer representing Bohemia Interactive, states in the release, “In the license agreement, Bohemia Interactive expressly reserved the exclusive right to develop sequels to the original OFP game.” Hermann expands upon the agreement between Codemaster and Bohemia Interactive, claiming, “Codemasters also acknowledged that Bohemia owns all the intellectual property in the game — except the words ‘Operation Flashpoint.’ Since Codemasters has no right to use the Bohemia Interactive game engine or any other component of the Bohemia-developed game, how can it rightfully claim to produce a ’sequel’?”

Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis, a Cold War-era FPS, was developed by Bohemia Interactive and published by Codemasters for PC in 2001. Codemasters has since developed a sequel (in name only, according to Bohemia Interactive) internally as Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising; while Bohemia Interactive has continued using updated versions of the original Operation Flashpoint game engine in its ArmA series. We’ve seen this kind of franchise catfight before (see: Call of Duty and F.E.A.R.), though this one seems likely to bare some deeper scars.

We’ve put in word to Bohemia Interactive and Codemasters for comment and will update as necessary.

Sony in talks with Rockstar for more GTA on PSP

d339f_gam_vicecitystories_580 Sony in talks with Rockstar for more GTA on PSP

It might seem as though the once-strong relationship between Rockstar Games, developers of the highly profitable Grand Theft Auto franchise, and Sony, the progenitor of the consoles said franchise once almost exclusively appeared on, is on the outs. Following the 360-exclusive Lost and Damned DLC, and the movement from the series’ portable appearances to the DS with GTA: Chinatown Wars, it appears Rockstar has jilted all things PlayStation in hopes of attracting younger, more lucrative suitors.

However, this isn’t exactly the case. In a recent interview with MTV Multiplayer’s Stephen Totilo, PSP hardware marketing chief John Koller explained that Sony isn’t ready to let that particular cash cow go out to pasture. Koller commented that the two PSP-based GTA titles sold like bullet-riddled hotcakes, adding that there’s “definitely continued conversations with Rockstar” regarding future Grand titles on Sony’s handheld. We can only pray that they’ll be as Phil Collins-centric as the last one.
