As listed in the most recent issue of Japanese mag Famitsu (and translated by Andriasang), Platinum Games’ fourth effort for Sega, Vanquish, is headed to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this winter. The game’s director, the acclaimed Shinji Mikami, spoke with the Japanese mag recently and divulged information that wasn’t easily gleamed from the debut trailer.

Apparently, Atsushi Inaba (ex-CEO of Clover Studios) will be serving as producer on what Mikami calls a “shooter that places importance on the good tempo and feeling of rhythm you get from playing an action game.” The game’s said to be set in a near future where US/Russian Cold War relations have resulted in a standoff and, instead of a traditional biotic life form war, Vanquish sees the main character battling robots while dressed in lightweight amor. “There are lots of games where you shoot and kill people, so this time we wanted to try and see how we could convey the good feeling of shooting robots.” Truer words, Mr. Mikami. Truer words.

Allegedly the game is around 80 percent done at this point, with only “annoying” work left to (enemy and ally AI are among the few tasks left). Will we see Vanquish on North American shores this winter as well? We’re unfortunately not sure just yet, but with the game “developed with overseas markets in its sights,” we have to imagine Platinum Games would like its latest title to land in our trigger-happy hands as soon as possible.

There may be a disappointing lack of beer and laser-shooting owls in this new set of screenshots from The Flying Hamster. But don’t worry, the game still looks absolutely insane. The upcoming side-scrolling shooter for the PSP stars — what else? — an adorable flying hamster, as he makes his way through levels clearly designed by a Mad Libs book. Seriously, what’s going on in this image? We have no idea.

“Traditional motion capture could never bring to life the subtle nuances of the chaotic criminal underworld of L.A. Noire in the same way as MotionScan,” claims Team Bondi’s Brendan McNamara, commenting on MotionScan. It’s the new motion capture technology being employed first by his studio’s moody crime game, L.A. Noire. In a press release yesterday, Depth Analysis announced the new tech and touted its many applications in the forthcoming Rockstar title.

Allegedly, MotionScan uses “32 high-definition cameras to capture true-to-life three-dimensional performances at up to 30 frames per second,” thus allowing for the supposedly “emotional performances” that McNamara says make L.A. Noire “a truly unique and revolutionary game.” Aside from the claims of higher quality, the mocap system supposedly has lower operation costs due to a streamlined post-production processing time. With any luck, we’ll finally see all this big talk in action — and compare ir with other performance-capture scenes in games like Uncharted 2, Alan Wake and Heavy Rain — this September when the game arrives on store shelves.

We know that there are a few cutlery enthusiasts out there who read that headline and immediately clicked the source link to purchase Kratos’ Blade of Chaos from retailer BUDK. Before you do so, you should take into account a few facts:

1. Kratos’ weapons are being sold piecemeal on the site, so that $123.99 price tag only represents the cost of a single Blade. What’s the point of having a single Blade of Chaos? Unless you’re ironically cosplaying as Amputee Kratos, you’re going to need two, so you should mentally jack that price up to $247.98.
2. Replica swords are dangerous.
3. Replica swords that you attach to your wrists with chains and then swing around like a madman are extremely dangerous.

We’ve never been great counters, but we’d say there are three studios working on major Call of Duty games now. A recent internal memo (as reported by G4) apparently confirms that Infinity Ward — despite all of the recent stuff going down there — will remain “central” to the franchise. So, counting that studio and Treyarch, along with Sledgehammer Games and its own Call of Duty title, that’s … four three! The Count would be so proud of us!

This internal memo reportedly comes from CEO of Activision Publishing Mike Griffith, who said, “Infinity Ward remains central to Call of Duty’s future” and that Activision would continue to “rely on the combined talent, expertise and leadership of the team there for [Call of Duty's] success.”

With the Blur multiplayer beta going live on March 8, we’re anxious to get some quality time with Bizarre Creations’ upcoming racer. In the interim, the game’s official blog details what players can expect from the beta, but perhaps more interesting is what’s tucked at the bottom of the update: a release date of May 25. Europeans will have to wait a few extra days, as the game won’t be in shops until May 28 over there.

Is no one impressed by your massive stockpile of (relatively) ancient virtual cars in Test Drive Unlimited? It’s almost time for you to pick up this year’s model — Atari recently announced that this coming Fall would see the release of Test Drive Unlimited 2 on PS3, 360 and PC. This sequel will offer the persistent, open-world multiplayer racing of its predecessor, while introducing new elements such as vehicle damage, day and night cycles, and weather.

The press release promises “the world’s most desirable vehicles,” but we all know the best part of Test Drive Unlimited was the fancy clothes you could buy for your character. We can’t wait to see what exciting fashion lines TDU2 brings to the table.
