gamsocomncover580 SOCOM cheater convicted in grand jury investigation for crashing Sonys site

There’s a few valuable life lessons in the following story, so pay attention: A Pittsburgh news station recently reported on a 17-year-old boy who was disqualified from a SOCOM U.S. Navy Seals tournament after it was discovered he was cheating. In retaliation, the young man hacked into the official PlayStation site, and crashed it for 11 days back in 2008. Sony re-retaliated by opening up a federal grand jury investigation into the “cyber attack,” which led back to the aforementioned boy, who is now in a whole heap of trouble.

The teen pleaded guilty, and was convicted on four felony charges: Unlawful use of a computer, criminal use of a computer, computer trespassing and the distribution of a computer virus. He’ll be sentenced later this year. The moral of the story? Don’t cheat while playing online games, and don’t crash the web sites of gigantic corporate entities. If caught, you could end up being branded a cheater. Or, you know, a felon.

Hellacious marketing: Dante’s Inferno is in the code

dantesinfernodigg02042010-1265300975 Hellacious marketing: Dantes Inferno is in the code

It seems the marketing team behind Dante’s Inferno hasn’t burnt out yet, with several ASCII art campaigns popping up in the source code for several popular websites. All direct to the same Dante’s Inferno site.

The first image (above) appeared in digg’s code, as noted by brentcsutoras, and other sites like IGN, GameSpot and Kotaku also had their source code altered to display Dante-related images. It’s one of the cuter, somewhat classier approaches to this title’s marketing, and that makes it oddly noteworthy.

If you’re wondering why there’s nothing in our source code (we’re checking now just to make sure) … we don’t let anyone touch that. We consider it to be at least third base and you really have to get to know Joystiq before it’s prepared to take the relationship to that level.

The Scurge of MMO Account Hacking

563a7_wow_account_hacked3-484x262 The Scurge of MMO Account Hacking

As MMOs increase in popularity, an alarming number of people are having their accounts hacked on a daily basis. The problem has become so epidemic that its overall weight is dragging down respective customer support centers as they attempt to placate irate and confused customers. In some cases, it can take weeks to retrieve your character and if you’re lucky, you may get your items back.

Now, the vast majority of these problems could be avoided if gamers used their heads, but with the increased casual appeal of your typical MMO, we’re finding more players who simply don’t know better until it’s too late. It’s a hell of a way to learn. How are hackers getting account information? A variety of ways:

1. You get an email that looks like it’s from the Customer Service department of the MMO in question, asking you to update account information. You click the supplied link and are taken to a site that looks legit. Unfortunately, it isn’t…and you have just supplied all relevant account information to a hacker.

I get these emails on a daily basis. Here’s what one looks like (DO NOT CLICK THE LINKS!):

The investigation will be continued by the Account Administration team to determine the any further suspensions. If the account in question is found in violation of the EULA and Terms of Use, further action will be taken. Be aware that any additional inappropriate actions may result in the permanent closure of the account.

Thank you for respecting our position on this matter.

Though it’s certainly not the sleekest handheld device we’ve ever seen — in fact, it might be in the running for the unsleekest device ever created — the latest project from a modder, nicknamed Techknott, boasts some pretty impressive capabilities. Basically, the handheld sends control signals to a PS3, which transmits video signals back to the device, allowing for nomadic sessions of Modern Warfare 2 (or any other PS3 game), as seen in the video after the jump.

According to the modder’s post on BenHeck.com, the device will soon be available for purchase. It certainly looks neat, but we’re not sure the clunky controls will help you set any Spec Ops world records. Seriously, this guy’s time on The Pit is garbage.
