While not quite the 94 review average that Modern Warfare 2 eventually ended up with, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is off to a generous start on Metacritic, averaging a 90 as of this writing. The developers at DICE have certainly kicked up some dust in challenging the monolithic multiplayer of MW2, but it remains to be seen what will eventually shake out online. For now, we’ve got the single-player reviews for you, just below:

  • GamePro (5/5 Stars): “Bad Company 2’s unexpected emphasis on survival skills caught me completely off guard … The radical change in pace forced me to think and react differently to the situation than I normally would, and it made for an incredible experience. Bad Company 2 definitely has the necessary chops to give the current king of, well, modern warfare, a run for its money..”
  • GameDaily (9/10): “Combat is both intense and exhilarating. Nothing beats unloading a few grenades at a house and watching the ammo tear chunks from it while dead bodies sail through the air. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is an immensely entertaining shooter that demands your attention”
  • Official Xbox Magazine UK (8.0/10): “While the likes of Call of Duty and Gears of War lead you into bottlenecks where they can dazzle you with explosions and special effects, Bad Company 2 feels more like a diluted sprawl of ideas across a large canvas. This variety ensures things stay interesting but it makes it a solid rather than spectacular effort. You’ll enjoy it, but will find that you struggle to recall any standout moments once the credits finally roll.”
  • Totally Video Games: (7/10): “While Battlefield 2: Modern Combat (on previous-gen machines) and the original Bad Company both featured standalone single-player campaigns, both fell well short of the kind of gameplay we’ve come to expect of the Master Chief or Sergeant ‘Soap’ MacTavish. Unfortunately, DICE still hasn’t turned the corner with its single-player design in Bad Company 2.”

Metareview: Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing

allstars115 Metareview: Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing

It could just be our lowered expectations for games including kart racing, Sonic or “All-Stars” in the title, but we were pretty surprised by the positive buzz for Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing; the Wii, PS3 and 360 versions are all doing well with a 79 percent average on Metacritic. Here’s what’s being said:

GameSpot (80/100): “Although the core of Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing is obviously pulled straight out of Mario Kart, this wacky racer can stand on its own four wheels. The tight controls and excellent track design ensure that head-to-head competition is always exciting, but it’s so fun just to play around with these karts that it’s easy to lose hours climbing the online leaderboards in Time Trial mode.”

1UP (B): “Though it has some hiccups, unexciting party modes, and a questionable difficulty curve, All-Stars Racing is a respectable effort that makes a good kart racer at its core (and is at least much more cohesive than Sega Superstars Tennis).”

Nintendo Power (8/10): “It isn’t quite the fan paradise it could have been, but it’s a very good racer that makes great use of classic Sega franchises. We wouldn’t mind a sequel with more franchises and tracks included.”

IGN: (8/10): “It’s pleasantly surprising to find out that the Nintendo Wii edition - apart from the lower resolution - gets similar treatment with close to the exact same features as the stronger hardware.”

Metareview: Heavy Rain

Quantic Dream’s serial-killer-suspense-meets-family-drama adventure title, Heavy Rain, received the official Joystiq Seal of Approval[TM], but how did our peers in the world of gaming journalism feel about the title? Let’s see what some other critics had to say about the interactive romp through rainy Frenchadelphia:

  • GamePro (5/5): “Put simply, Heavy Rain is a gaming experience that took huge risks in design, narrative, and game mechanics, and executed on its ideas to masterful effect. You will care, in the end, about the decisions you made to shape the fates of your characters, and wonder long after it’s over if you made the right choices.”
  • 1UP (A-): “Though shorter than other epic, multi-disc titles, there’s more than enough content in Heavy Rain to warrant a purchase. At the end of my first playthrough I was left utterly satisfied with the conclusion of the story and wanting more titles of this caliber.”
  • Eurogamer (9/10): “A thrilling mystery, cleverly composed, and unlike anything else you will play this year. It may also be the only game you play this year where pulling the trigger makes you really feel something, and I can think of no greater compliment.”
  • Giant Bomb (4/5): “Interactive storytelling might not yet be able to evoke the same degree of raw human emotion as more traditional art forms, but this is a big step in the right direction.”
