Sony: 85,000 PlayTV units in UK shipped
Released just last week in the UK, PlayTV has already shipped 85,000 units. That’s quite a big number considering that only around 9,000 pre-orders for the video recording device were placed before its release.
If things go well for Sony, PlayTV could eventually land a big footprint on media hub history. And while the Go!View service is already avaiable on the PSP, the PlayTV pushes the handheld’s capabilities further by allowing PS3 and PSP owners on-the-go viewing via Remote Play.
Currently, PlayTV is priced at GBP 69.99, with a release in North America being a big question mark still. Here’s to hoping that reception in the UK will convince Sony to release the freeview box in the US as well.

Video: PlayTV UK Demo
The UK Demo trailer for Sony’s PlayTV has hit the web, and we’d have to say we’re quite impressed with what we saw. The video is a no-frills take on what the program essentially has to offer, and really, it looks like the program itself is no-frills.
It showed the various features like the following:
- View, Record & Rewind Live TV
- Fast and easy to use Guide
- Background recording during gameplay
- Keyword programme search
- Remote Play access for PSP
Personally, what I’m really excited about is the Rewind Live TV function. Imagine rewinding over and over antics from the World’s Craziest Videos or something. That’s bound to be a hoot! And of course, how can you not be excited as well with the Remote Play access for the PSP? Cool, huh?
Anyhow, it’s all looking very promising and we’re sure you can’t wait to go see it for yourself. So go ahead, just click the play button in the embed below and you’re good to go.

Sony’s sent out PlayTV to be judged by reviewers. This particular peripheral intends to “future-proof” the PlayStation 3, essentially by allowing you to play - even pause - live TV through your console.
CVG’s verdict? It’s a cool recording package with its intuitive menus and easy features. But 70 (US 125 approximately) might just prove to be too much to pay a price for a Freeview box that already comes with most HDTVs.
But amidst all those pros and cons, what got our attention most was the fact that Sony did stick after all with their plan of letting PSP owners have the ability to copy DRM-free versions of your recorded programs to your handheld. Not just to the PSP, in fact, but also to any other compatible MPEG-4 device.
Apart from that, you can also access PlayTV via PSP through Remote Play, thereby allowing you to watch live TV or stored videos in it. Cool, huh? Now you don’t have to worry about missing an episode of your favorite show, even when on the go.
The full review of CVG on TVPlay is available via the source link below, so we’re sure you’d want to check that out.

PS3’s PlayTV: you can record TV content while playing games
Good news for PlayStation 3 gamers in the UK when PlayTV launches next month. According to Sony, the service will allow you to record TV content while playing video games.
Makes sense, right? An extremely useful feature If you feel like playing video games instead of watching shows, but your favorite show happens to be on.
The Guardian’s Greg Howson explains in his review of the service:
There will be a message in the final build of the code that will ask you to reboot your PS3 to enable the background recording functionality. [...] Unfortunately you can’t record two programmes at once - you can record one channel and watch Live TV on another though - which feels a little restrictive.
Also of note in Howson’s review is that PSP transfer from the PlayStation 3 requires a conversion process of videos, which is “fiddly” enough to make most users feel that it’s not worth it. Although he does note that remote play worked well.
PlayTV will launch September 19 in the UK, with the rest of the Europe, and Australia and New Zealand to follow.
