Here’s that second PSP analog stick you wanted

pspmod_100609 Heres that second PSP analog stick you wanted

Tim Magoolaghan is quite the modder and has made a Frankensteinian PSP. Aside from the second analog nub he slapped on this custom PSP-2000, he’s also added a built-in camera, 32GB of Flash memory (eliminating the UMD slot) and a dedicated charging port that allows USB charging no matter what the handheld is currently doing. In the video interview where he shows off his creation (video past the break), there’s also some emulation stuff going on due to the custom firmware, but we don’t condone that kind of thing.

Tim’s whole motivation behind this custom PSP is that he wants to show consumers the older model can do wonderful things that the new PSP Go cannot. He says Sony’s new device isn’t very consumer friendly and while we think he has something there, it’s overshadowed by the fact that he’s sitting next to the most annoying woman on the planet.

[Thanks, Robin!]

GPSP v03-11-2008

Homebrew - GPSP v03/11/2008 - Image 1An unknown coder has released a new version of exophase’s gpSP, the GameBoy Advance emulator for the PSP.

Looks like this version is an update for the new M33 CFW, from what I can tell of the mangled translation. Here’s the (barely decipherable) Google-translated readme:

gpSP_mod_m33.zip included in the EBOOT.PBP, CFW M33 only. PSP_LARGE_MEMORY option is enabled.

Currently, the following problems are identified, depending on your situation, please replace.

Regular Edition

  • 1.M33 to use extended memory to run the applications you use, 32M to load the Lomb
  • And crashes. (4M second half of the region can not be used?)
  • If used on 2.IR Shell, in a road crash Lomb.
  • The PSP-2000 expansion in the region are using the memory, because it can not be used.

M33 Version

  • 1. Extended memory at once M33 to run applications that use the M33 after the extended memory without specifying
  • We can use.
  • So, does not support the application may cause problems. The cause of the above 1.
  • 2. At the same time the use of plug-ins and crashes.
  • (PspStates Experiment, MacroFire, aute mute, etc.)

Notes:

  • PSP-1000, the problem does not occur.
  • Both use the same.

Good luck poring through that. I suggest sticking to exophase’s or takka’s version anyway.

Here’s your proof: PSP-3000 interlacing scanline features are really hardware-based

PSP-2000 vs PSP-3000 - Image 1

[Cue plumber's voice] “See naow, thuurs yer prawblem!”

The guys at French site Logic-Sunrise wanted to investigate the PSP-3000’s “scanline feature” and, quite literally, put it under a microscope. As seen in the pics above (they’re 40x magnified under the microscope), the LCD pixels on the PSP’s screen, prove two things:

  1. the PSP-3000’s blue pixels are darker than the Slim’s; since they’re darker, the dark scanlines are more prominent
  2. the PSP-3000’s pixels are arranged horizontally (hence the horizontal scanlines) as opposed to the Slim’s pixels, which are arranged vertically

And what’s their conclusion after this finding? Quite simply, that the “feature” is 100 hardware-based (because that’s how the LCD screen was really built), just like the SCEJ rep previously said.

Hmm, if Sony’s decided to cease PSP Slim production, they might be in for rough times.

Fishy, fishy: PSP-3000 pulled out from PlayStation site, silent recall imminent?

PSP-3000 vs PSP-2000 - Image 1

A couple of observant people in the PlayStation EU forums pointed out that almost every single mention of the PSP-3000 has been removed from the official PlayStation EU site’s PSP section.

True enough, when you go to the website (see Via link) and check out the “Hardware” section of the PSP, there’s no whiff nor word about the PSP Brite. Meanwhile, doing a keyword search on the EU site for “PSP-3000″ now only gives you a handful of hits: one from an October 15 news item, and the rest being LGC 2008 press material from August. Why is that?

Over at the PlayStation US website, the same section (namely, PSP -> Hardware) does make mention of the PSP-3000, but with a minor tweak. As some folks at DCemu point out, the Ratchet-PSP bundle has a slight word change in the PSP-3000’s description:

They also appear to have changed the description on the American site:
Originally
‘This system features an improved LCD screen with the widest color gamut’
Now it says;
‘This system features an advanced LCD screen with the widest color gamut’

It’s pretty hard to deduce anything concrete out of these weird changes - maybe conspiracy theorists are just getting ahead of themselves. For all intents and purposes, we don’t have to panic (yet?): maybe the PlayStation EU site is just undergoing some staggered construction for some PSP-3000 blow-out feature in the near future?

The only reason why this comes as a surprise (a pretty bothersome surprise) is because these discoveries were made following all those recent reports about the PSP-3000 interlacing issues features that people have been complaining about. With that in mind, online speculation now holds that Sony might be silently recalling the PSP-3000 and replacing the old units with “advanced” LCDs.

Care to pitch in your own theory?

PSP-3000 interlacing issues are "features", won’t be fixed

PSP-3000 vs PSP-2000 - Image 1

Well, I’ll be damned… As complaints about the PSP-3000 screen’s interlacing issues pile up at the PlayStation US forums, all Sony had to say was that they were “looking into it.”

While everyone’s waiting for further developments from Sony U.S., the folks at Engadget have gotten word from Sony Computer Entertainment Japan. The SCEJ representative that contacted them, in Engadget’s words, noted that:

the interlacing-like lines are just “features” of the new LCD, and currently, there are no plans to fix it with a future software update since it is in the hardware.

They’re… what? Features? Not a very keen feature, if that’s the case. Nevertheless, a serious question is now posed: are you willing to put up with scanlines on your screen for Pandora glory care of DAX and the TA-090? Buying a PSP-3000 now requires serious thinking, it seems.

More PSP FW 5.00, PS3 FW 2.50 features surface: PSP TV-out feature expanded, PS3 gets Flash 9 UPDATE

XMB - Image 1

Article originally posted Oct 01, 2008 at 09:43AM

New information about the upcoming firmwares for the PS3 and PSP have surfaced. Well, when Eric Lempel revealed the list of features for PS3 FW 2.50 and PSP FW 5.00 yesterday, he did say it wasn’t the entire changelog.

See, just earlier, Sony’s sent an official press release outlining pretty much everything that Lempel said yesterday: PSP gets the PSP Store, a sleep timer option, redesigned XMB, and an on-screen QWERTY keyboard. But here’s something new, right off the press line:

  • Video-out The PSP-2000 s video-out feature will be able to display classic PlayStation format titles at the full-screen size of the TV that the PSP is connected to; the feature also will support interlace displays.

[insert wide grin here]

Meanwhile, on top of in-game screen capture, bluetooth headset support, and other cool changes, the PS3 FW 2.50 will also carry some other features which weren’t included in Lempel’s list. From the same press release we have this (thanks to FreePlay for catching this bit):

  • Information Board The Information Board will be able to include direct links to PlayStation Store, making it easier for PS3 owners to download content that they read about on the Information Board.

Also, via Eurogamer, we now learn that the new firmware will introduce Flash 9 support on the PS3’s web browser. EXIF (exchangeable image file format) information will now also be visible in photos, and the German on-screen keyboard will get some remapping with its Y, Z, Q, and A keys.

UPDATE

PS3 Firmware 2.50 is now available for downloading, folks. You can check out the changelog once you start the download. You can also hit the link below for more info on it.
