As listed in the most recent issue of Japanese mag Famitsu (and translated by Andriasang), Platinum Games’ fourth effort for Sega, Vanquish, is headed to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this winter. The game’s director, the acclaimed Shinji Mikami, spoke with the Japanese mag recently and divulged information that wasn’t easily gleamed from the debut trailer.

Apparently, Atsushi Inaba (ex-CEO of Clover Studios) will be serving as producer on what Mikami calls a “shooter that places importance on the good tempo and feeling of rhythm you get from playing an action game.” The game’s said to be set in a near future where US/Russian Cold War relations have resulted in a standoff and, instead of a traditional biotic life form war, Vanquish sees the main character battling robots while dressed in lightweight amor. “There are lots of games where you shoot and kill people, so this time we wanted to try and see how we could convey the good feeling of shooting robots.” Truer words, Mr. Mikami. Truer words.

Allegedly the game is around 80 percent done at this point, with only “annoying” work left to (enemy and ally AI are among the few tasks left). Will we see Vanquish on North American shores this winter as well? We’re unfortunately not sure just yet, but with the game “developed with overseas markets in its sights,” we have to imagine Platinum Games would like its latest title to land in our trigger-happy hands as soon as possible.

Mega64 explains the appeal and letdown of Sonic … the restaurant

mega64sonic03012010 Mega64 explains the appeal and letdown of Sonic ... the restaurant

If you were to ask us what to expect from most fast food joints, we’d probably tell you to look inside your garbage can and basically expect that — but, y’know, inside of your stomach. We don’t know; it’s all the same pre-processed, assembly line garbage to us and we manage to successfully avoid it for the most part. But the Mega64 dudes instead find themselves in an almost perpetual, Groundhog Day-like loop when it comes to one particular establishment: Sonic.

Even though each trip usually makes the guys wish they never went in the first place, the thought of returning oddly enough fills them with hope that things will be different each and every time, only to suffer the grim realization again. It’s such a departure for Mega64, but we can’t help but feel like there’s some kind of correlation to a current gaming news item in here — so we thought we’d post this to see what you all think they’re talking about. While we think on it, head past the break and check out the video.

Sonic fans create the best boycott of all time

[Fanpop; bramcurtis]

Thanks to the internet, the word “boycott” no longer conveys an element of gravitas. In fact, we’re pretty certain that this collection of 1080 (and counting) Sonic fans doesn’t actually understand the point of a boycott. The petitioners are upset about Sonic the Hedgehog 4, knowing full well from the leaked footage that it will “simply not be anywhere near as good as the original Sonic games.” They’re not going to stand for this and have threatened to hurt Sega where it hurts the most: sales. “We will not buy it,” the petition explains. “We will in fact buy Sonic 1 on release in protest of Sonic 4.”

Take that, Sega! Instead of giving you money, these people are going to … give you money? Ha! Lesson learned. But in all seriousness, we do want to take a moment to offer some advice to the protesters: The best way to show Sega your disapproval isn’t to buy another one of its games. Instead, satiate your desire to hurt Sega and needlessly throw away your money by sending a check or money order to: Andrew Yoon c/o AOL, 770 Broadway, New York, NY 10003. Thanks, Sonic fans!

Valkyria Chronicles DLC lacks English voice track

valkyraiadlc4ann Valkyria Chronicles DLC lacks English voice track

Folks who are currently working their way through Valkyria Chronicles recently released DLC pack, Challenge of the Edy Detachment, have noticed something strange about the content’s English-language voice overs: They don’t exist. The add-on pack only includes two audio settings: Japanese and silent. Of course, you can still follow the DLC’s plot through English subtitles, but hey — we came here to blow up tanks with other tanks, not to read.

Siliconera suggests that the absence of words we can understand could be attributed to the fact that this DLC is going live six months after the game was released in the U.S., so it’s possible the English voice cast couldn’t be brought back together for an encore recording. We’ve contacted Sega for an official explanation and to find out why the English-language omission in the DLC wasn’t announced before people, you know, bought it.
